Newspaper have always been filters ...

What media organisations have not yet come to terms with is that their business model has always been about filtering available news, not generating content. By their own admission, they don't create the news, they report it.

News has always been abundant - sit in any pub or coffee shop and listen to the gossip - but media organsations have provided the service of filtering it and prioritising is according to their readers' or listeners' or viewers' perceived needs.

This has always been about a service, not a product, and it's only now that the economics of production have been significantly disrupted that they have been forced to confront that reality ...

When he suggests that there's still a model in putting up paywalls, Murdoch reveals that he STILL doesn't understand this ...

Google is just one form of meta-filter ...
