2008 Music goals
The industry literature relating not only to music, but to all successful enterprises, recommends the establishment of clear, attainable goals. As such, I have set these goals for The Genre Benders for 2008:
1) Want to play at least 12 paid club gigs in Brisbane. Have two tentatively booked for Feb and March, which is a good start. Can play The Alley each month if necessary but would like to expand beyond there. Contacted a second booking dude today (Ward 69 - Ant), though he seems more into heavier stuff than GBs.
2) Want to play at least one support for a tour. Started this process today by identifying the tour promoters putting shows in smaller venues in Brisbane. Have this written up in Outlook with weekly reminders.
3) Want to play at least one festival. Started this process today by identifying local prospective festivals in and around Brisbane. Have this written up in Outlook with weekly reminders.
4) Want to bring in a percussionist. Contacted 6 drummer/percussionists from Brisbanemusos.com today. Will work with recorded drums until the right candidate pops up.
5) Two more albums to be recorded. First one acoustic in January and the second at Phil's mid-year. This completes foreseeable recording needs and repertoire for about 90-minute shows.
6) Want to expand the live show from acoustic guitar to include some of the electric numbers: Dirty, It's about you and so on. Get funkier/rockier and so on ...
7) Want to play at least one gig out of Brisbane; Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, etc. This is beyond reach at the moment but can see it in the second half of the year - especially in conjunction with goals 2 and 3.
8) Want to develop network of songwiters/performers beyond Brisbane ... Kevin is a good place to start this. Songsalive will help if it gets off the ground.
2008 Goals
OK. IN 2007 I got confirmed, collected data and wrote three papers, two of which are seriously being considered for publication and the third of which is with Phil being finished. I thought I'd have a go at setting some goals for 2008.
1) Want to write at least 3 more papers in the first half and two more in the second half. That would give me a total of 8 for the thesis. The minimum is 3 and 5 is recommended. POhil says I should try to publish everything. The three written to date are on a) political economy of New Media (the hourglass model); b) Home studio production and c) musicology of the 21st century.
The three for the first half of 2008 would be about a) Methodology; b) community music (musowiki) and c) Intellectual property.
There's also room for two more but I can't remember the topics off the top of my head - I'll look them up here later.
2) I want to get musowiki up and running in the first quarter. This is important for the community music paper and also financially. It is now sponsored and hosted by Hostbaby, has the beginnings of merchandise to generate revenue and needs to be done for ideological reasons.
3) The Genre Benders are to record two more CDs. The first of these is to be recorded next week at QUT using Adam's engineering. This is the interim-development approach for the thesis. The second will be produced at Phil's studio by Phil and will be the "commercial" version. These are important data in light of the feedback I got in Philadelphia and what I learned in writing up the record production paper.
4) I must write up the road map and release it to the participants in the first half of the year. This is long overdue and will generate data for the next stage of the research. It should also be timed to gain maximum promotional benefit for the GBs releases.
5) I have a bunch of separate goals for the act/band, which I will detail in the next post.
