January 31, 2010New Merch storeHey there ... long time no see ... I've been playing with ReverbNation and have made this funky online store. It's got all the GBs tracks in it, plus some t-shirts and ringtones and other stuff. It would mean a lot to me if you bought something from it to enable the GBs to get back to their musical productions this year. Tell you what: bring anything from this ReverbNation Merch store to our next show and I'll give it a special autograph just to demonstrate my appreciation for our true fans. January 30, 2010Another attempt to control digital rights?Just found this article outlining a new audio file format that is supposed to replace MP3s. It essentially uses a downloaded MP3 as a Trojan Horse - ostensibly to allow users to download lyrics, artwork, etc to their player. Users are supposed to be able to control their privacy settings to restrict its activity, but I still think this is a pointless idea. My predictions: if it's not a quantum leap in customer service it will go the way of Betmax video; if they bill it as competing with piracy, it will go the way of every other DRM initiative ... On the other hand, if they get enough partners who like the idea and support it (I'm looking at you, iTunes) it might get up the way Blu-Ray has ... January 27, 2010I'm back! Now that I have successfully negotiated the post-Christmas holidays with my beautiful kids, I can announce that I'm back! The other news is that I have completed two drafts of my PhD and hope to present it to the University in February, with the final draft to be submitted in March. This brings to an end a long and arduous process and means that I can get back to making music and commenting on the world of digital music. [sigh] It only sort of feels as good as it sounds. Will probably feel better when I have actually submitted. Lots more news, developments and commentary to follow, along with Musowiki.net development and a job search ... Oh, and lots of new recordings and new songs ... Posted by Hughie at 10:40 AM | Comments
