Simplicity

This one took a couple of years to write. It started out as a little guitar lick one night of deep drunken depression when I was living with my brother in a crumbling house in Cadell St, Toowong - not yet 21. The house is not there any more, replaced by a block of flats, which I find strangely poignant. A couple of years later I got to thinking about what the first part meant and then wrote part 2 to clarify it a bit. First performed it in 1995 - I've recorded three versions at various times, all of which I hate. One day I'll post something here you can listen to ...

Simplicity (in C)

SHadows pass, I see a green light shining
And I live in the dark.
Shadows fly, I se our lived entwining.
As we wander through a moonlit park.

And I wonder; why wonder?
While I'm wondering.

People pass, the light's still shining.
But they live in the dark.
People fly, near and far, inviting.
They pass me by but they leave their mark.

And I wonder; why wonder?
While I'm wondering.

(Part 2)

And I hear no pounding drums.
I hear no blaring brass.
All I hear is a sweet guitar,
Coupled rhymes, repeating themes.
Simplicity, simplicity.

I don;t own expensive yachts,
Don't drive a red sports car.
And yet I travel far and wide,
No entourage, no limousine
Simplicity, simplicity.

And I wonder; why wonder?
While I'm wondering.

(in D)

But I hear the crying street,
And I read the headlines.
Who was it said life had to be hard,
We got the Internet, the XPT.
Technology, technology.

But I know the lust the for.
That endless, aching need.
The searing, all-consuming fire,
That begs around: God help me, please.
Destroying me, destroying me
Destroying me, destroying me.

And I wonder; why wonder?
While I'm wondering.

(back to C)

Yeah I wonder; why wonder?
But I'm still wondering.

We're on iTunes!

Just found Bun' Ber E's debut CD, Ceilidh, in the Apple iTunes store. What a buzz!!

Awesome to see it for sale in the same space as all of my heroes! Never thought I'd see the day, and even if it doesn't sell a single thing, it's great that it's there.

Of course, you have to download the Apple iTunes software or buy an iPod to buy the songs. Also, even when I've done that, I can't buy the tunes because there's no iTunes in Australia ...

Funny, that. It's somehow absurd that music made in Australia and available in CD form in Australia and all over the world cannot be bought from an online store in Australia - especially when it can be bought by Australians from Netmusic or BuyMusic. See if you can work that one out ...

Such are the ridiculous times in which we live and create.

Incidentally, we'vbe now sold out of the hard copies and have ordered more. We've also struck a deal with Scotland-based Tradmusic.com, and with Candid Marketing, who we met at the Rathdowney Heritage Festival and who helped us sell our last remaining copies in record time.

Powering on through the haze of vigorous amateurism ...

Determination

Well! This morning on the radio I heard an interview between the hosts and one of the nobody comperes from Australian Idol. They were trying to arouse interest in the upcoming Brisbane auditions.

Inevitably, the question was asked why Idol excluded people older than 28. The reply was that if someone hadn't realised their dreams of pop stardom by 28 they ought to consider a different career!

The irony was that only a few weekends ago, I'd heard Paul Hogan, on the same station (but on Saturday morning) proclaiming how he was the luckiest man alive. His take on his career was that there were plenty of people who could do what he does - he just happened to have been in the right place at the right time!

Of course, he was being a little too modest, I suspect, but I agree wholeheartedly with his point. I know plenty of extremely talented people who've simply never been given the break they need. Another classic case in point is Pete Murray - he's my age and has only had a hit in the past year ... incidentally, I hate the few songs of his that I have heard. "So damn pretentious" about says it all.

Anyway, this has made me all themore determined to make a living fromthis calling. With or without hits, Australian Idol, whatever. I'm gonna show those smug bastards what enduring star quality looks like.
